The Kankakee Valley Park District exists to acquire, develop and maintain parks; promote the conservation of natural and historical resources, and provide recreational facilities, programs, and services for the benefit of all District residents.
Established in 1925, The District serves the 28,250 residents of Aroma Park and Kankakee Townships. It is governed by five elected Park Board of Commissioners, and employs 10 full-time staff and approximately 70 part-time, seasonal, and temporary workers.
We are thrilled to provide you with the latest updates on the Bird Park improvement project beginning October 2024. With the support of grants from OSLAD and Senator Sims, we are making significant strides in enhancing our beloved park's facilities and accessibility.
What's Coming:
- Playground replacement
- Splash Pad renovations
- Meditation Garden and labyrinth
- Extended walking path
- Bandshell accessibility
Beginning October 7, 2024, there will be no parking at the Bird Park Fields. The playground and Don Palzer Bandshell will be closed during construction for outdoor recreation. Additional areas will be closed as well further into the construction progress, including Mullady Launch at Bird Park (will only be accessible for emergencies only) and the area surrounding the splash pad. Updates will be given at a later date on the closure of these areas. The project is anticipated to be completed in May 2025.
We are excited about the progress we've made and the positive changes these improvements will bring to Bird Park. These enhancements will create a more vibrant, accessible and enjoyable space for our entire community. There will be no pickleball on Tuesday, November 5 at the KVPD Rec Center due to the election. The next scheduled session of pickleball will be on Saturday, November 9 from 9:00 am - 12:00 pm. We hope to see you on the courts soon!
